Although a free service may not cost you anything extra, it's worth a try just to make sure that you are dealing with a reliable and reputable company.Another goo d place to start is by checking the company's website. Career Change How to Talk About a Job Shift With a Spouse
Career Change How to Talk About a Job Shift With a Spouse This article is part of a series of stories offering help with âHot Topicsâ: tricky family conversations that have real financial impact. Our financial priorities are changing. Research suggests that a majority of Americans now consider a healthy work-life balance a better measure of success than a fat paycheck â" and burgeoning benefits like flexible work arrangements are making it easier than ever to strike that balance. As working families gain more freedom over their career trajectories, some are taking a step back to assess whether theyâve chosen the right path to begin with. Yet for workers making a mid-career transition, the financial stakes are higher than for young professionals â" you might have to take a pay cut as you start at a lower rung in a new profession, or recalibrate your skills through additional education. Such a change, then, calls for careful planning â" and, if youâre married, a frank discussion with your spouse. Close Modal DialogThis is a modal window. This modal can be closed by pressing the Escape key or activating the close button. âIâm a big believer in second careers, of reinventing yourself, but it has to be in line with the rest of your goals,â says Allan Roth, a Colorado Springs, Colo.-based financial planner. âFollow your dreams, but do it in a smart way.â PAIN POINT Making a change can be challenging, particularly later in your career. The share of people who changed careers was 2.2% in 2012 for workers aged 45 to 65, according to the American Institute for Economic Research (AIER) â" much lower than the 5% seen in the general population. PREP WORK Understand how making a change could affect your familyâs finances. Start with an expense sheet that documents your spending. You can use an app like Mint.com, a spreadsheet, or a yellow legal pad, but it will probably help to have a yearâs worth of credit card and bank statements at hand. Make sure you account for irregular expenses like home and car maintenance. Now look at money coming in, and subtract the salary of the partner who wants to pursue a new opportunity. Youâll need to have a frank discussion about whether you could live off one income, even in the short term. Go back to the expense sheet to discuss what you could cut, if needed. Finally, look at job postings in your desired field to get a sense of what you might make once youâve made the switch. That will help you understand whether your family is looking at a long-term drop in income or a short-term gap. OPENING LINE âIâve been unhappy at work for a while, and I think Iâm going to need to make a shift. Can we sit down and figure out how I could make a change work?â This isnât the kind of conversation one partner can spring on the other in the middle of a bad week. Both members should have ample time to decide if the change is an investment theyâre OK with, according to Roth. âYou have to buy into this together,â he says. TALKING POINTS âThis could be a tough period for us, at least in the short term. Are we both comfortable with the change?â While a new role could well help your family in the long term, whether financially or emotionally, there will almost certainly be short-term hurdles. Brainstorm all the issues that could spring up. Is it less money? More hours? Variable workloads? âThis is almost certainly going to bring new headaches,â Roth says. âIf youâre thinking, âmy gosh, this is going to be perfect,â youâre probably making a mistake.â Both spouses must be solidly comfortable with the change, says Cristina Guglielmetti, a Brooklyn-based financial planner. If the transition involves the temporary loss of one income, the health of the other job canât be in question â" and that partner must be OK with taking on the weight of being the sole breadwinner. If these are up for debate, itâs time to talk compromises, Guglielmetti says. Can the spouse who wants a change scale back at their current job instead, maybe working part time or on a consulting basis? Can he or she moonlight in the profession they aim to transition into, or take night classes to prepare for the new role, and shorten the time it takes to find a new job? â"â"â" âWhat kind of time frame are we talking about?â A common mistake couples make during the planning stage is failing to set realistic goals, Roth says. To get a sense of how long the shift could take, arrange informational interviews with contacts in the field. Then sit down with your spouse to set a timeline and figure how much of a hit youâll take â" this is where youâll use those expense and income sheets. âTaking the conversation from this nebulous thing to a conversation thatâs based on facts and figures gives couples a clearer sense of what [a career transition] means,â Guglielmetti says. âThey go from wading into the void to making an informed decision.â Experts suggest that you plan for at least a year before you even start the shift. Start building your network through LinkedIn, Beyond.com, and other career-based websites. Look at job postings to see whether youâll need extra training or a new degree. If youâll need to go back to school, that could extend your timeline and may require you to set aside money for tuition. Finally, because the AIER study found that almost one in five people failed to make a late career change stick, agree on a fallback plan. Decide with your spouse exactly what circumstances would make you throw in the towel â" and commit to those parameters. âMake a list of at least three things that can go wrong, and how each of those scenarios would impact the family,â Roth says. â"â"â" âWill a career change really make me happy?â For some people, the cure for burnout isnât so much a career change as a career hiatus. If this sounds like you, discuss plans now that will help you transition back to work as seamlessly as possible once youâve had a break. You can look for ways to volunteer in your industry during your hiatus, or take a class that keeps you up-to-date on technological advances in your field, says Sallie Krawcheck, the former Merrill Lynch CEO and co-founder of the digital investment startup Ellevest. For women, this is especially important: One in five women reported a pay cut of 20% or more after taking a career break, according to research from Krawcheckâs womenâs network, Ellevate. âOnce youâve left the working world, it can be hard to get back on that horse,â she says. âIf you want to keep your skills sharp and your connections intact, you canât step fully out. You have to strategize about how to stay fresh.â NEXT STEPS If the transition is going to require a multi-year career break, Guglielmetti suggests that you and your spouse take it for a test run: Both of you keep working for a full year before launching the shift, but live on just one salary. By the end of that year, youâll know if you can hack it for real, and youâll have a nice chunk of change stashed away to help you bridge the gap. ONE FAMILYâS SOLUTION Guglielmetti recently took a couple contemplating a career transition through a baseline-spending scenario. There was a drop in income, but there were also some financial positives. The salary loss shifted the coupleâs tax burden, and other small expenses like commuting costs went down as well. In the end, the pair decided to take the plunge.

Why You Should Connect With Co-Workers On Social Media - Work It Daily
Why You Should Connect With Co-Workers On Social Media - Work It Daily Though many people elect to keep their professional and personal lives separate, the advent of social media is making this less and less common. As traditional notions of privacy are becoming somewhat antiquated or, at the very least, more fluid, the way people who work together connect online is also evolving. Should you connect with co-workers on social media? There are many good reasons for developing personal relationships with your colleagues, and social networking has only made forming such bonds simpler. Naturally, some separation between work and home is still necessary, and not everyone can (or might want to) be your friend; regardless, forging strong relationships with the people you work with can be highly beneficial to both your professional and social life. One of the benefits of friendships at work is that you feel more invested in the people you work with, as well as your place of business. Social networking makes this investment easier because most people portray themselves honestly (even if they engage in some conscious editing), listing their likes, dislikes, and the sort of things they care about, like movies, music, video games, and political interests. Naturally, knowing this information could lead to some friction if you disagree or dislike things your co-workers like â" however, this information could also provide the basis for developing a strong friendship if the information they list overlaps with yours. There should be a limit to how much you engage with your co-workers on this level, though what that limit is will depend on a variety of factors, such as the line of work you are in and what the policies are for out-of-office fraternizing. More conservative places of business, such as offices of law, medicine and politics, may require less sharing. One should always be mindful of their privacy settings and know how to use them. Each service, from Twitter to Facebook, has its own way of enabling you to edit the content you put out to the world and who gets to see that content. Learn how each works, and err on the side of caution. Itâs important to know whatâs appropriate to share. Innocuous items like your favorite song, a movie youâre excited to see or even the birth of a child generally fall well within acceptable material. Anything having to do with sex, religion or politics, on the other hand, is likely to prove uncomfortable for some people in your workplace, if not downright divisive. Facebook allows you to set privacy settings for individual people on your friends list. Be sure to make use of that. Google+ uses a similar feature of friendship âcirclesâ; when you post content on Google+, you can select which of your circles (such as âfriends,â âfamilyâ or, in this case, âco-workersâ) get to see the post. Friends in the office can be useful, whether youâre having a good day or a bad one. They can and will support you if they feel invested in your output and general well-being, and will be there with added understanding when youâre frustrated by something in the office. Engaging in social media networking to make friends is a good idea in virtually any workplace, so long as youâre responsible about the way you interact and treat people, and as long as you donât allow your online social life to become a distraction at work or completely replace your in-person interactions with your colleagues. 5 Signs Youre a Total Productivity Addict
5 Signs Youre a Total Productivity Addict Addiction to productivityis a real thing? its ?similiar to a dependence on a substance or food that leads to maladaptive behavior. Clinically speaking, addictionoccurs when someone is engagingin something thats pleasurable, but the continued use or act becomes compulsive to the point of interfering with normal life responsibilities (work, relationships or health). To make matters worse, an addictmay leid be awarethat his or her behavior is out of control. If you think youre sliding into an addiction to productivity (i.e. youre becoming a workaholic), here are a few questions to ask yourselfAre you acutely aware of when you are wasting time? Do you beat yourself up for it?Are you reliant on technology to optimize your time management? Is your 1 topic of conversation how crazy busy you are? Do you think hustling sounds impressive, while doing less sounds lazy? Are you a slave to your email inbox? Compulsively checking it or feeling like your phone is an extension of your arm?Do you feel guilty when you only cross one item off your to-do list or find youre keptawake at night by work stress?Have you ever rolled your eyes when your friend says shell finallyget started on that side project shes been talking about for months, yet you do exactly the same and rationalize it by thinking youre too swamped?Recognizing your preoccupation with productivity is the first step in refreshing your approach to it. If you answered yes to any of the questions above, thats a good gauge that youd do well to take your foot off the gas in your quest for powerhouse status. But what to do next? herbeies a few suggestions to get you started.1. Rewire Negative Self TalkYouve got work to get done? ?of course you shouldnt go out tonight Sound familiar? How about Youre not making this time useful??thats why you havent been promoted yet. The next time your inner critic slams you for not being good enough or working hard enough, talk back. Dont let any thou ghts run through your brain that you wouldnt say out loud to your best friend. This attitude change will improve your life.2. Say NoStop stuffing your to-do list out of guilt or a desire to please. Say no toany new responsibility that doesnt benefit your professional or personal growth or that you truly dont have time for.3. Stop Talking Big Game and Actually Take ActionIts one thing to indulge in listicle after listicle of productivity tips or talk about the ambitious plans you have for your business, but at the end of the day, taking action is what counts. This also means resisting the urge to complain (or brag) about how slammed you are, no matter if its over Bloody Marys at brunch or in 140 characters on Twitter. Being productive in a healthy way means not needing validation for it.4. Accept Downtime as Recharging TimeAlthough you may feel like youre wasting time if youre not scratching something off your to-do list, the opposite is often true. Your mostmeaningful ideasmay come in that one moment when youre not distracted or triaging emails. Let your brain relax to refuel your attention and focus. The Happiness Project authorGretchen Rubin, in evaluating how to form healthy habits in her life made a commitment to never look at her smartphone whenever shes walking somewhere in buchung to let herself free-think. Try it Here are other fun and affordable self-care activities you can try in your downtime, too.5. Embrace Just in Time LearningMaximizing your productivity often leads to unproductive multi-tasking. Instead, zero in and do one thing at a time. Consumeonly the information you need to accomplish the task at hand, which is known as just in time learning. This approach encourages you to collect information only as you need it, rather than hoarding it and trying to learn a huge variety of things in-depth. If youre working on launching your side hustle, that might mean focusing solely on learning sales skills to get your first paying client rather than div ing into learning how to code an entire website and marketing funnel from scratch. There will come a time for that. But its not right now.Of course, enjoying the feeling of being productive is not inherently shameful. Theres so much pressure all around us??on billboards, in movies, in ourFacebook feeds, in overheard conversations at the gym ? to turbo-charge our lives. We always have to be doingmore, striving formore, offeringmore and doing it all faster. We feel like if were not up to snuff, then well fall behind and never be able to catch up.But what is it all for in the end?Dont lose sight of the truly important things in life. Relish peaceful moments in your day from thesmell of a freshly brewed mug of coffeeto the warm sunlight that shines on your morning commute. As I liketo say, dont put off your life for work that can be done tomorrow.--Melody Wilding is a coach and licensed social worker who helpsambitiousexecutives and entrepenerusmaster the psychology of success. 3 Tips for Bridging the Generational Communication Gap With Millennial Workers Asmora and more millennials enter the workforce each year, its important that employers and employees of older generations are well equipped to work productively with their younger colleagues. Generational differences can lead to communication issues at work, which can in turn lead to bigger problems.Luckily, communication issues can be prevented when everyone makes the effort to bridge the generational gap. Heres some advice onforming valuable workplace connections with the millennials in your office1. Be an Authentic LeaderMillennials thrive on authenticity. Authentic leadership is an alternative to leadership styles that emphasize profit and shareholder value above personal relationships and ethics. To be an authentic leader means to build legitimacy through honest relationships with followers. These relationships are built on ethical foundations. If you have authentic r elationships with yourfollowers, yourfollowers will begin to genuinely value yourinput as a leader.According to Inc. magazine, 92 percent of millennials believe that business success should be measured by more than just profit. This indicates a strong aversion to profit-focused leadership among millennial-age employees. By building trust and generating enthusiastic support among their subordinates, authentic leaders are able to improve individual and team performance and are more likely to gain the respect of their millennial workers.2. Meet Them Where Theyre At Be Up to Speed on TechnologyWeve all had conversations with our grandparents that began When I was your age or Back in the day .Millennials are getting tired of being told how different they are from previous generations, but the truth is they are different. They grew up in a very different world than their parents did.Millennials had Internet-equipped cellphones in grade school they will Google anything before they go to a library to lookit up.Instead of asking your millennial coworker to show you how they do things, get a younger family member or friend to tutor you. Why You Should Give Job References a Heads-Up
Why You Should Give Job References a Heads-UpWhy You Should Give Job References a Heads-UpChances are, at some point during your career, youve either asked for (or been asked to give) a reference. And with good reason. References are a great way to prove your bankability to a potential babo beyond what you have written on your job application. But its bedrngnis just enough to simply ask for a reference- you need to cultivate and care for your references, particularly if youre going to need them as part of an upcoming job interview. Below are a few reasons why you should always give job references a heads-up.Here are three reasons to give job references a heads-up1. It gives you a chance to assess the situation.Lets say you asked your former boss for a reference, and because you were a great worker, he gave you a glowing one.Thing is, over time, your previous boss isnt necessarily going to remember that he gave you a recommendation- or eventhat you worked for him, depending on the siz e of the company. So reaching out to your former boss before a new boss contacts him to ask about your work habits is a good idea.It allows you to assess the situation with your former boss for example, seeing if he still works with the company, and more importantly, if he still has a good professional standing and would be a good person to list as a reference.2. It gives you an opportunity to spotlight your achievements. When you reached out to your former boss to let himknow of your upcoming job interview, he was super excited for you. But when it came time to tell your boss-to-be of your past accomplishments, he was a little fuzzy on the details. He didnt remember that you were the one to implement a program that wound up saving the company a lot of money and frustration.Thats why its so important to give job references a heads-up before you put them down on your job application. It not only gives you a chance to reconnect, but to also remind your reference-giver of all your past g lories.3. It gives them time to prepare. As much as your old boss loved you, he might not love being contacted out of the blue to give a verbal reference. People like to have time to prepare their thoughts, especially if its an important issue, such as your potential new job.So out of respect for your former boss or colleague, give him a call (dont text or email) and reconnect. Then, remind him of the lovely reference that he gave you and that you are currently interviewing for X position. Let him know that a hiring manager will be contacting him within a few days to just confirm what he wrote. That way, youre being courteous to your former boss but also ensuring that hes prepared and polished when it comes time to give his verbal reference. Many hiring managers will request references from potential job candidates. Making sure you have references that are as current as possible and givingyour job references a heads-up will ensure you get an amazing reference that will hopefully get y ou the job.Readers, do you give your job references a heads-up that a potential employer might be calling them while youre job hunting?
